Dig deeper into your clay craft to create more intentional, consistent, and functional pieces in this class for students who have basic experience with the potter’s wheel. Set a personal goal—throw and trim a specific form, produce thinner pots, or experiment with larger pieces of clay—and focus on achieving it throughout the course. Cone 5/6 clay, basic throwing tools, and decorating materials such as glazes will be provided, and your pieces will be fired in an electric kiln to produce food-, dishwasher-, and microwave-safe functional ware.Spring 2026 -

Beginner Green Wood CarvingFine Arts & CraftsCarving fresh, found wood into useful objects is a fun, relaxing, and satisfying hobby. We will cover an overview of “green” woodworking, including tools, materials, process, technique, and safety. We will talk through the early part of the process of turning a log into a rough carving blank with an axe. Then you will learn safe, effective knife grips so you can carve your project. We’ll wrap up with a discussion on finishing touches, decoration possibilities, and how to continue in the craft. Class fees include all materials needed, as well as use of loaner tools. Butter Spreader/Cheese Knife: Wooden spreaders, present in nearly every Swedish kitchen, were traditionally hand-carved. Yours will be great for spreading butter and also soft, medium, and crumbly cheeses. This single-session class is perfect for complete beginners. Wooden Spoon: The serving spoons we’ll make have an extra-large bowl for generous helpings and a stout handle for ease of use. No prior experience is required, but some familiarity with woodworking, carving, or other handcrafts would be beneficial for this two-night class.Spring 2026 -

In this class for beginners, explore the potentials of clay by creating both functional vessels and sculptural forms. Learn basic handbuilding, wheel throwing, and surface decorating techniques. Rag rugs have a long history across cultures as a way to give new life to used textiles. Learn to repurpose bedsheets into rags and weave them into a rug using the braid-in method. Cane a ChairFine Arts & CraftsFix a family heirloom, create a keepsake, or rescue a chair from the trash. Bring a chair you want to re-cane to the first class. It should be light enough to carry and have a series of holes in the wood rail around the seat opening. We’ll prepare the chair, determine the cane size you need to purchase, and discuss how to order materials. Leave the final class with a restored chair and a new hands-on hobby. Please note: Students should send a photo of their chair to Kevin (kevinfbsmith@gmail.com) to confirm that it is the correct type of chair. Cyanotype ExplorationsFine Arts & CraftsOne of the earliest photographic techniques, cyanotypes (also called blueprints or sunprints), let you create unique images using natural and found objects. These workshops are beginner-friendly and perfect for anyone curious about alternative photographic processes. A Taste of Cyanotype (One Night): Create striking blue-and-white prints using natural and found objects like leaves, flowers, lace, and jewelry. Go home with 8–10 original designs and a new appreciation for the beauty of natural light and texture. Go Deeper with Cyanotype (Two Nights): The first night covers the basics of the historic sun-printing technique and includes creating your own set of blue-and-white designs on paper and fabric. We’ll also discuss other ways to create your own prints at home. On the second night, return with your prints to explore toning techniques that shift the cyanotype’s signature blue using tea, coffee, turmeric, and more, and experiment with larger or wearable fabric pieces.Spring 2026 -
Digital Art with ProcreateFine Arts & CraftsGain an introduction to the world of digital art using the Procreate app for iPads. Explore many of Procreate’s varied tools, shortcuts, and tricks, and develop design habits that are particular to digital artmaking.
