Each day you’ll hop on the van and head off to explore a different wilderness area, tackling hikes of varying distances and experiencing unique landscapes and challenges. Art on the TrailField TripsFULL DAY: Create art inspired by the natural world as you draw, paint, and build in outdoor settings across northeastern Massachusetts. Learn techniques to create depth in your landscape drawings at a scenic summit, sketch animals in motion at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, explore tidal pools and create sculptures using granite remnants at Halibut Point in Rockport, and experiment with watercolor techniques inspired by the flowing water and dramatic rock formations at Purgatory Chasm. Each location becomes your open-air studio, encouraging you to observe your surroundings, connect with the natural world, and turn what you discover into expressive artwork using a variety of materials.SummerFun! 2026 -
Winter Hiking & SnowshoeingGet Moving (K-12)Winter hiking is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the views offered by a leafless landscape, the crispness of the air, the way the forest sounds, and warming up on a cold day. Hike local wilderness areas such as the Middlesex Fells Reservation and the Western Greenway, led by an experienced guide. Engage your curiosity, seek out adventure, build camaraderie, and increase your stamina on hikes of varying distances and challenges. Gain winter hiking confidence as you learn how to use micro-spikes on ice, snowshoes on fresh powder, and headlamps when our hikes continue past sunset. Our club will culminate in an optional full-day hike* in the White Mountain National Forest. Pickup & Dropoff: Students should look for the Black Guineafowl sprinter van at 3:00pm. At Gibbs, the van will be outside the front door. At Ottoson the van will be at the bottom of the hill at the intersection of Acton Street & Appleton Place, below the soccer field. All necessary equipment (including hiking backpacks, microspikes, snowshoes and headlamps) will be provided for both the club and the hike. Sturdy and waterproof boots, wool or synthetic layers, and cold weather outerwear including gloves and winter hat are required. Note: The full-day hike is on Sunday, March 1 and is open to Hiking Club members only, register separately.Winter 2026 -
Outdoors: Hiking & SnowshoeingVacationFunSpend the school vacation week outside exploring and hiking in different nature areas each day. Winter hiking is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the views offered by a leafless landscape, the crispness of the air, the way the forest sounds, and warming up on a cold day. Gain confidence as you learn how to navigate and stay warm. We may even use microspikes on ice and snowshoes for snowy terrain. Warm drinks and hiking snacks will be provided, but you will need to bring your own lunch. Please note that this is a 3-day program. Rain dates may apply. Some necessary equipment (including hiking backpacks, microspikes, snowshoes, and headlamps) will be provided.
