Dive into the history of comic-making and explore many different ways to create, design, and plan a comic book/strip sequence. Explore dragons, kingdoms, witches, and more while learning how to structure a plot, pace your story, and use vivid language and illustrations that captivate your readers. Draw inspiration from a variety of fantasy works as you create characters, worlds, and adventures that make your audience laugh, cry, or cheer.

Let’s break out the ink and get started on planning and creating your very own graphic novel. Brainstorm a plot outline, cast of characters, and setting, then pick an art style and start storyboarding. Daily storytelling workshops will help you generate and develop your ideas. We’ll also look at the work of well-known authors for inspiration. End the week with the beginnings of a graphic novel, plus plans and materials to continue working on it on your own

Learn the craft of journalism, including investigative writing and research. Each day our classroom transforms into a working newsroom, complete with editorial staff, reporters, columnists, and headline writers. Each of us will play multiple roles and work together to publish our own newspaper with stories about our community. We will edit each other’s work, take photographs, and publish our final newspaper.

Develop your own video shorts from start to finish. In small groups, you’ll storyboard, rehearse, and film commercials, how-to videos, and short features. Plan your script, visuals, and sound before stepping behind the camera to capture your scenes. Then edit and enhance them using green screen backgrounds, add music and sound effects, and watch your videos come to life.

Create your own storybook. Learn how to develop exciting characters, come up with a fun plot, and write a short, simple story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Bring your tale to life with pictures by using your imagination to illustrate the characters and scenes. We’ll bind our books, and by the end of the class, you’ll have a complete storybook of your own, filled with both words and colorful drawings that show off your creativity and storytelling skills.

Bring your favorite songs to life on screen as you make your own music video. Work in small groups to plan your concept, choreograph moves, make props, and learn basic filming and editing techniques using iMovie. At the end of the week, we’ll celebrate by premiering everyone’s music video masterpiece in a fun class showcase.

Use a camera to capture epic battles and create whimsical worlds. You will make miniature scenes starring your own toys and learn how to photograph them so they look life-sized.
