New England Shrubs
Shrubs are a key part of our New England landscapes. We will take a close look at about a dozen common native New England shrubs such as highbush blueberry, silky dogwood, and staghorn sumac, as well as a few non-native invasive shrubs. The class will focus on plant identification as well as fun and interesting natural history. We’ll see a plant that can be used to make a lemonade-like drink packed with vitamin C and a plant that the Chippewa used to produce a remedy for craziness. Bring a hand lens or magnifying glass if you have one.
Please note: Children ages 10+ are welcome to register if accompanied by a registered adult. Meeting location will be emailed upon registration.

Jeff is an avid outdoor enthusiast & naturalist who’s been enjoying the natural world for 50 years. He’s a member of the Friends of the Fells, The Trustees, Mass Audubon, Sudbury Valley Trustees, Acton Conservation Trust, Arlington Land Trust, Essex Greenbelt, Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions, The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Tufts University, Newton Conservators, Friends of Fresh Pond and The Massachusetts Archaeological Society, Inc.
He currently leads Plant ID walks for the Town of Lincoln Conservation Department (TOLCD) and Lincoln Land Conservation Trust (LLCT) / Rural Land Foundation, the Friends of the Middlesex Fells Reservation, Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT), Acton Conservation Trust, Wright-Locke Farm, Newton Conservators, the DCR at Breakheart, Walden Pond and Halibut Point, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Tufts University, Lincoln-Sudbury Adult & Community Education, Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm and Fresh Pond Reservation.
