Introduction to Drawing with Pencils
Get started with drawing using one of the most accessible, affordable, and versatile tools: the pencil. We’ll begin with graphite and expand into colored pencils as a fine art medium. Practice techniques that strengthen composition, shading, and observation through still life and photographs. We’ll touch on basic color theory, draw inspiration from a range of artists, and experiment with combining pencil with materials like pastel and gouache.
The materials list can be found here.
Claire Forrest
Claire has always enjoyed working with graphite but color pencil has been her medium of choice for over a decade. Her subjects range from the personal, such as commissioned pet portraits, to the ordinary, like an ear of corn. An interest in art history allows Claire to appreciate all forms of art but finds inspiration in artists like Cézanne and Hopper, as well as the playful style of L.S. Lowry, and Bruegel. Claire’s mother is an artist and remains the biggest influence of her artistic journey. Teaching her children about color, texture and shape, as well as encouraging them to play with all art materials, she hosted classes for children and adults in her home art studio. It is because of her that Claire finds joy in the process of creating art. Claire has participated in the Arlington Open Studios, displayed work in local shows and invited to host a solo exhibit featuring her acrylic paintings.
