Applied History: Assessing Current Issues Through a Historical Lens
Adult Enrichment / ACE Highlights -
Winter 2026
Explore how the past can illuminate the present through the study of applied history—an approach that uses historical precedents and analogues to better understand today’s challenges. Grounding contemporary issues in historical context offers a deeper, more connected understanding of current events. We’ll focus primarily on U.S. history, examining topics that provide meaningful context for understanding the issues we face today.
Jay Barry
Jay Barry has been a history teacher at Arlington High School for twenty-three years. He has primarily taught U.S. History over the past several years. Jay’s work in the area of applied history began in 2017 and led to a full-year sabbatical from teaching during the 2022-2023 school year, thanks to a grant from the Stanton Foundation and support from the Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center Applied History Project. During this sabbatical year and beyond he developed case studies, made numerous presentations on applied history to high school history departments, ran several teacher workshops in applied history, and connected with a number of college and university professors. His upcoming book, Past Forward: An Applied History Approach to Teaching U.S. History, will be published by Hachette UK.
