The First Amendment in American History

Adult Enrichment / ACE Highlights -
Winter 2026

For more than a century, the constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion, speech, and the press have been among the most frequently examined issues before the Supreme Court. Yet, the First Amendment was rarely a concern deemed worthy of the Court's attention until the World War I era. Since then, it has become one of its most significant and frequently litigated matters. We’ll focus primarily on freedom of speech and of the press, with a handful of cases exploring freedom of and from religion. Explore how these fundamental rights have evolved through landmark decisions and how Americans from all walks of life have stood before the nine justices to define—and defend—the meaning of the First Amendment.

I am a freelance journalist who writes about nonfiction and music for several Boston-area publications. My interest in the First Amendment was born in a journalism class at Harvard Extension School, from which I received a master’s in 2013. I am currently taking graduate-level classes in history at HES in hope of obtaining a second highly lucrative degree.
