Please note: Levels 1 and 2 have been combined. Instruction will be modified to accommodate all students. The class will start at 6:30 pm.

Get a gentle introduction to Mandarin Chinese, whether you’re looking to explore a new language, connect with Mandarin-speaking friends and family, or simply keep your mind active. 

Level 1: Designed for complete beginners, this class introduces foundational Mandarin skills and emphasizes speaking and listening in everyday situations.  We’ll cover basic vocabulary, essential phrases, and simple sentence structures, making learning both fun and accessible.

Level 2: For those who have completed Level 1 or have some prior knowledge of Mandarin. Continue developing your skills to engage in simple conversations and gain confidence using Mandarin in real-life contexts.

Tong Chen

Tong Chen is a Lecturer of Chinese at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has been teaching for over 27 years. Originally from China, Tong has previously taught at Indiana University Bloomington and Williams College. He also taught for 25 summers at the renowned Middlebury College Language Schools, primarily working with beginner-level Chinese learners. He has also served as the President of both AAICE and NECLTA, as well as on the Board of Directors for CLTA. Tong has also published several books, ranging from Chinese grammar books and textbooks, as well as articles focused on the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.
